What is the TOEFL test
TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language, is the most common and internationally accepted examination that evaluates the English Proficiency of non- native speakers. Almost 2400 institutes operating in the United States and Canada demand TOEFL scores from their prospective applicants.

The non native speakers at the 11th grade level or above are eligible for the test, which is offered in 180 countries around the world.
 
An examinee is basically tested on his capability to understand North American English via the TOEFL test.

Internet based TOEFL, introduced in late 2005 is slowly replacing both computer based and paper based tests.

TOEFL is developed and administered by ETS. Prometric Testing Services Pvt Ltd , the Indian franchisee for ETS administers the test in the selected cities across the country.

The Computer based TOEFL test is held throughout the whole year. Candidates can choose any date of their convenience to attempt the exam since the test is available five-days-a-week (Monday through Friday), twice-a-day. September to December is the peak season for TOEFL test when maximum numbers of students appear for the test. If your preferred period for taking the test is during this peak season then you ought to register very early (say 90 days in advance) in order to get the date of your choice. In other cases you are obliged to register at least three days in advance. The estimated duration of the test is four hours.

The fees quoted above are subject to changes prior notice. In India, the fee payable at the time of registration comes to around US $130.

The amount has to be paid by means of a US Dollar denominated draft, taken in favor of "ETS - TOEFL" payable in the U.S. Another mode of payment is via a credit card which has global acceptance

Important
Please take care that the name written on the registration form matches in all respects with the name in your passport. You can attach the photocopy of the Passport along with the application form to evade any faulty registration.
 
How to Apply?
You can collect a copy of the "TOEFL Information Bulletin" for free from the Prometric Testing Services and USEFI. You can find the Test Scheduling Form within the bulletin.

The following are the three ways to register for the TOEFL exam

By Phone: You may call up the Prometric office any time before 12:00 noon to register. Be certain to call and register at least THREE BUSINESS DAYS prior to the test date.

Registering by Fax: If you are registering by fax, then you must send your fax at least SEVE
